Sonny Wolf

Sonny Wolf is an Austin blues guitarist and vocalist who plays the music with old-school bite rather than polished blues-festival manners. Originally from Montreal, Wolf formed his first band around 2000 after spending several years working the jam-session circuit. In 2007, he brought the band south to Austin and planted himself in a city where loud guitars, deep grooves and road-tested blues still carry real currency.

Wolf’s sound reaches back to the electric blues of the late ’50s through the ’70s, mixing Texas guitar fire with the heavier pull of Chicago blues and straight-ahead rock ’n’ roll. His vocals have a rough, Muddy Waters-like weight, while the guitar work often lands in the neighborhood of Stevie Ray Vaughan—gritty, muscular and built to hit hard in a live room.

The Sonny Wolf Band has become a steady presence across Austin and Central Texas, playing venues such as Friends Bar, Moontower Saloon, Maggie Mae’s, Bouldin Acres and Lucky Rabbit. More than a revival act, Wolf keeps the blues working as living barroom music: loud, soulful and unapologetically direct.
