About

Ramón Covarrubias Garza (born 8 December 1945 in Monterrey, Nuevo León), known as Ramón Ayala—“King of the Accordion”—is a pioneering Mexican norteño accordionist, vocalist, songwriter, and bandleader whose career has defined borderlands music for more than six decades. Taught accordion as a child by his musician father, he worked Reynosa cantinas as a teen before partnering with bajo sexto player Cornelio Reyna in Los Relámpagos del Norte, modernizing norteño with virtuosic squeezebox lines and melodramatic polkas and ballads that became standards on both sides of the Rio Grande.

After the duo split in 1971, Ayala formed Los Bravos del Norte and built a vast catalog—well over a hundred albums—across Freddie Records and related imprints, including enduring favorites like “Un Puño de Tierra.” Multiple Grammy wins, Texas Monthly–level cultural status in the Rio Grande corridor, and multi-generational fans have kept him a festival and arena draw from Monterrey to South Texas and beyond—four generations of dance floors and family parties still answer to his accordion.

Expect classic norteño: accordion-driven polkas and corridos, heart-on-sleeve borderland storytelling, and the living encyclopedia of a style he helped invent—still touring major Latino markets including Central Texas dates.
