About
McLemore Avenue is an Austin instrumental soul/R&B group named for the Memphis street that houses Stax’s “Soulsville, U.S.A.” legacy. In the tradition of Booker T. & the MGs, Jimmy Smith, The Meters, and Medeski Martin & Wood, they build southern-flavored grooves around Hammond B-3 organ, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion—original music with deep soul DNA rather than pure covers-club fare.
The project’s known lineup has included Patrick Benfield on Hammond B-3, Landis Armstrong on guitar, Chris Johnson on bass, Kevin Remme on drums, and John Bush on percussion. Live, they favor outdoor and patio stages as much as clubs—regulars on Güero’s Oak Garden calendar for free afternoon soul under the trees.
Expect organ-forward instrumentals, southern R&B heat, and a set that sits between jazz-club sophistication and danceable soul.
