Mary Charlotte Young
About
Mary-Charlotte Young works the shadowy side of Texas Americana, where folk storytelling, honky-tonk heartache and Southern Gothic weirdness all share the same barstool. Appalachia-born, Georgia-raised and now based in Bryan, she has become a regular presence across the Central Texas circuit, including Austin rooms such as The White Horse and Rustic Tap.
Young is especially drawn to murder ballads, bruised love songs and stories that dig into the darker corners of human nature. Her percussive acoustic guitar style gives the music some muscle, while her voice can move from hushed and haunting to sharp enough to cut through a noisy roadhouse. Formerly performing under the name Magic Girl, she has since released music under her own name, including the 2022 project Honky Tonk Eyes and 2025’s The Wimberley Flood.
There’s an old folk-song backbone to what she does, but this is not precious coffeehouse Americana. Young brings grit, theatrical tension and a little punk-rock nerve to the Texas singer-songwriter tradition.
