About
Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds is the current stage identity of John Sturgill Simpson (born 8 June 1978)—the Kentucky-born outlaw country singer-songwriter and actor long celebrated for critical favorites from Metamodern Sounds in Country Music through A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, Sound & Fury, the Cuttin’ Grass bluegrass volumes, and The Ballad of Dood and Juanita. After promising only five studio albums under his own name, Simpson debuted the Johnny Blue Skies alter ego on Passage du Desir, then fully embraced the moniker with band billing on 2026’s Mutiny After Midnight.
The project keeps Simpson’s magpie range—outlaw country, psychedelic soul, roadhouse funk, and disco-flecked rock—while treating The Dark Clouds as a real working band rather than anonymous sidemen. Live, the Who the F**k Is Johnny Blue Skies? era culminated in Red Rocks shows where he insisted the room learn the new name, ready to leave pure “Sturgill Simpson” billing behind.
Expect cosmic outlaw country with funk and rock horsepower when Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds hit Texas amphitheaters and festival stages.
