About
George Ensle is a genuine Texas folk lifer—a songwriter whose roots reach back to the Houston coffeehouse scene of the late 1960s, when he shared stages with Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Billy Joe Shaver. He later moved through Austin’s formative singer-songwriter world, developing a warm, conversational style built around finely detailed story songs and an intricate fingerpicking attack.
Across more than five decades, Ensle has released at least 16 albums and written songs recorded by Gary P. Nunn, Bob Cheevers, Will T. Massey and Jeff Talmadge. His work ranges from intimate folk and country reflections to Small Town Sundown, an ambitious “movie-in-song” set in rural Texas.
Ensle’s influence also runs deeper than the record shelf. He has worked as an artist-in-residence in Texas schools, mentored veterans through Soldier Songs and Voices, and used songwriting in educational and healing programs. Inducted into the Houston Folk Music Archives and the South Austin Pop Culture Museum, he remains a quietly essential link to the original Texas troubadour tradition.
