About
Deer Tick is an American alternative rock and folk band from Providence, Rhode Island, led by singer-songwriter John J. McCauley with guitarist Ian O’Neil, bassist Christopher Ryan, and drummer Dennis Ryan. What began as McCauley’s solo project in 2004 grew into a durable four-piece known for ragged-voiced Americana, barroom poetry, and albums that swing between tender folk and loud rock without losing Providence grit or working-class detail.
Across two decades—on labels including ATO—they’ve worked with high-profile producers and issued a deep catalog from early cult favorites through Emotional Contracts (2023) to 2026’s Coin-O-Matic, a self-produced love letter to Rhode Island’s working-class histories and underworld lore (the title nods to a cigarette-vending front for the Patriarca crime family). Live, they’re a road-tested unit: McCauley’s sandpaper vocals, dual-guitar interplay, and sets that reward longtime fans and festival crowds who want songs with scars.
Expect elevated folk-rock with bruised heart and road mileage—indie Americana that still hits like a club band—when Deer Tick comes through Austin and the Texas club and festival circuit.
