Coffee Sargents
About
The Coffee Sergeants are one of Austin’s long-running psychedelic pop bands, formed in 1989 and rooted in a side of the city that feels far removed from polished country and blues clichés.
The group blends jangly guitar pop, folk, organ-soaked psychedelia and quietly strange rock arrangements. Their sound carries traces of early Pink Floyd, the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, the Beatles and the Paisley Underground, but it still feels tied to old Austin neighborhoods, small clubs and the city’s independent music culture.
The band’s catalog includes Moonlight Towers, The Blessing House, Consolation Has No Phone, El-Ariesh, Purple Martin Sanctuary and the more recent Racing Shadows.
Their songs often move at an unhurried pace, layering guitars, keyboards and dreamy harmonies around lyrics about memory, loss, alienation and a changing Austin.
Live, the Coffee Sergeants can be gentle and hypnotic one moment, then noisy and swirling the next—a real local original with more than three decades of history behind them.
