Austin Mayse

About

Austin Mayse is a Texas-born singer-songwriter whose music lives somewhere between Americana, country, folk and that loose, hard-to-pin-down Austin sound.

Originally from Texas City, he moved to the Hill Country to get closer to Central Texas’ music scene, bringing a mix of humor, sincerity and lived-in storytelling to his songs.

Mayse came up around legendary Texas songwriter Rusty Wier, eventually traveling and playing shows with him. Wier even contributed a guest vocal to Mayse’s debut album, Devil on My Shoulder, during what’s reported as Wier’s final studio session before his death in 2009.

Mayse’s later album, Bridges & Kerosene, brought in an impressive group of Texas players including Walt Wilkins, Tina Wilkins, Rich Brotherton, Geoff Queen, Harmoni Kelley and Jenny Fleenor.

Mayse is also a longtime trumpet player and has worked with other bands, including The Great American Boxcar Chorus.

His songs range from reflective and road-worn to funny and easygoing, with obvious musical DNA from Rusty Wier, Jerry Jeff Walker, Walt Wilkins and B.W. Stevenson.
