Atlas Maior

Atlas Maior is an Austin progressive jazz and world-music ensemble that maps Jazz, Arab, Turkish, Latin American, and related traditions into original compositions. The project places Middle Eastern and Mediterranean colors—oud textures, modal melodies—in dialogue with jazz improvisation, Latin groove, and exploratory arrangements rather than straight standards sets or cover-band world-music kitsch.

Public materials and live bills frame them as progressive jazz meets world music from Texas: albums and Bandcamp releases of original work, regular Monks Jazz and regional listening-room dates, Rio Grande Valley and statewide appearances, and instrumentation that has included alto saxophone, oud, upright bass, and drums in various lineups (players such as Joshua Thomson, Joshua Peters, Josh Flowers, and Gray in documented shows). Expect cross-cultural jazz improvisation and global rhythmic color when Atlas Maior plays Austin rooms and Texas jazz stages.
