About
Alborosie is the stage name of Alberto D’Ascola, a Sicilian-born singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who built his career inside Jamaica’s reggae culture rather than simply borrowing from it. Born in Marsala, Italy, he discovered reggae as a teenager, taught himself guitar, bass, drums and piano, and began performing with the Italian group Reggae National Tickets before relocating to Kingston to pursue the music at its source.
After working in Jamaica as a studio engineer and producer, Alborosie emerged as a solo artist with Soul Pirate, the album that introduced signature tracks including “Kingston Town,” “Herbalist” and “Still Blazing.” His gravelly voice, heavy basslines and commitment to roots reggae helped him earn credibility with Jamaican audiences while also building a large international following.
His music moves between roots reggae, dub and dancehall, with lyrics centered on spirituality, resistance, social inequality and personal independence. Alborosie has recorded with major reggae figures including King Jammy, Horace Andy and members of Bob Marley’s former backing band, the Wailers, while continuing to produce and play much of the instrumentation on his own recordings.
More than two decades after moving to Jamaica, Alborosie remains a rare bridge between European reggae and the Jamaican tradition that shaped him. His work respects the genre’s history without treating it as museum music, combining vintage production, modern rhythms and a fiercely independent point of view.
